BBC Only Connect fans fume ‘absolutely not’ as Victoria Coren Mitchell accepts ‘wrong’ answer
Victoria Coren Mitchell and Only Connect question-setters have come under fire from several BBC viewers following Monday night’s episode of the long-running quiz show.
Coren Mitchell was on hand to welcome Too Many Cookes and Pipe-Dreamers to the programme with the two teams of three each hoping to emerge victorious.
However, just a few minutes in, Coren Mitchell appeared to irk several viewers with her “leniency” towards Too Many Cookes and a series of questionable answers.
In one instance, Coren Mitchell even addressed her leniency when she told team captain Jonathan Cooke: “I’ll take it, I’ll take it.
“I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you guys later,” she said to Pipe-Dreamers.
The moment came after giving Too Many Cookes the points for their guess “Niversity Challenge” when looking for the connection between films whose titles were missing the letters of their age classifications.
Coren Mitchell referenced her leniency later in the programme when Too Many Cookes had the chance to chip in and win points off of Pipe-Dreamers.
“You’re close but I think a couple of times already this evening I’ve given it to you for nearly answers, and this is for a bonus so I’m not going to,” she told them.
Arguably the biggest talking point of the evening came soon after, however, when Too Many Cookes were given a picture round for them to determine what the common connection was.
The first picture was the sun, the second was a shoe and a queue, and the third set of images were a tree, a bee, and a knee, prompting Too Many Cookes’ captain to buzz in.
Coren Mitchell revealed his answer of “Yokohoma” was incorrect before passing it over to Pipe-Dreamers who similarly were baffled by the image question.
The BBC presenter explained: “Clue three, it’s not clueing Tribbiani but look how it sort of is. This is where you see patterns in patterns!”
Counting out the number of words per clue on her hands, Coren Mitchell “It is just, sun… shoe, queue… tree, bee, knee. So we’ve got one thing that rhymes with one, two things that rhyme with two and three things that rhyme with three.
“But tree-bee-a-knee. I mean, I love you for finding it there. Unfortunately, you can’t make a sequence of the Friends character with the others, otherwise I’d give you extra points for finding that.
“I just want to hear four things that rhyme with four,” Coren Mitchell added before revealing the BBC quiz show had loaded door, Demi Moore, Thor and a boar as its clues.
The episode was soon flooded with disgruntled comments on social media, with many X users hitting out at the answers Too Many Cookes provided as well as the notion that “sun” rhymes with “one”.

A second echoed: “She’s so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct.”
“Sun doesn’t rhyme with one #onlyconnect,” a third weighed in before a fourth argued: “Afraid I am in team ‘one and sun obviously don’t rhyme’ #onlyconnect.”

At the end of the show, Too Many Cookes emerged victorious with 27 points against Pipe-Dreamers’ 20.
