Joel Dommett makes feelings clear on ITV Masked Singer Macy Gray chaos as he breaks silence on storm-off
The Masked Singer host Joel Dommett has called Macy Gray’s dramatic stage exit “the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life” after the American singer stormed off during Saturday night’s elimination.
The incident occurred during this weekend’s episode of the ITV show when Toad in the Hole, later revealed as Gray, faced off against Bear in the dreaded sing-off.
After the judging panel chose to eliminate Toad, the 56-year-old singer immediately left the stage, leaving the crew bewildered.
Judge Jonathan Ross explained he and his fellow judges were “certain” of Toad’s identity and were “desperate” to confirm their suspicions – which was ultimately why they decided to eliminate Gray.
The singer was reluctantly escorted back to the stage to complete the unmasking and appeared visibly frustrated by her early departure – with Dommett noting that the early elimination shouldn’t be a source of frustration for the contestants.
During the reveal, Gray’s responses were notably brief, answering only “Yeah” when asked if she had enjoyed her time on the show.
The awkward moment prompted widespread social media reaction, with judge Maya Jama sharing a TikTok of the incident captioned: “Me at any inconvenience.”
Speaking to Paddy McGuinness on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 39-year-old presenter Dommett couldn’t contain his amusement at the unexpected moment.
“In my professional career – I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice – but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off.
“If you go home early though it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.
“You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad,” the host added.
He also noted that Gray’s distinctive voice made her identity obvious: “The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and we all knew it was her.”
Dommett later posted the clip on Instagram with a simple “lol” caption, before adding another of a Daily Mail headline with the image being Gray standing alongside himself in his shorts.
He captioned the post: “My shorts make this whole article so much funnier.” (sic)
The host revealed the situation was made even more comedic as his shorts had been getting progressively shorter after each ad break, leaving him “in hot pants” during the dramatic exit.
This wasn’t Gray’s first experience with The Masked Singer format. She previously competed in the Australian version as Atlantis in 2021 and appeared as Sea Queen in the US version in 2023.
